Santa Rosa: A Twentieth Century Town
Published in Hardcover by Historia Ltd (November, 1993)
Authors: Gaye Le Baron, Joanne Mitchell, and Gaye Lebaron
Average review score:

Outstanding representation of local history
This book is thouroughly researched and beautifully crafted. I would recommend this book for anyone interested in the history of Santa Rosa and the Sonoma County area. An additional recommendation on the subject would be the author's (Gaye LeBaron and Joann Mitchell) first book, SANTA ROSA, A 19TH CENTURY TOWN.

Schizophrenia
Published in Hardcover by Blackwell Publishers (March, 2003)
Authors: Steven R. Hirsch, Daniel R. Weinberger, and Penny R. Mitchell
Average review score:

More than a textbook
Prof. Hirsch and Prof. Weinberger are the admirable international figures in psychiatric research. As the editors, they conjoined the most famous contributors of every subtitle in schizophrenia research. Reading it in 1999, some of the contents seemed a little out of date. However, to consolidate current findings and concepts on schizophrenia, it is not only a textbook but also a historical masterpiece. Next edition of such an encyclopedia on schizophrenia may not be composed until next decade.

Science and Technology of Terrorism and Counterterrorism (Public Administration and Public Policy, Vol 101)
Published in Hardcover by Marcel Dekker (September, 2002)
Authors: Tushar K. Ghosh, Mark A. Prelas, Dabir S. Viswanath, Sudarshan K. Loyalka, and Richard H. Mitchell
Average review score:

Unique
The Science and Technology of Terrorism and Counterterrorism examine some topics that you might find in other texts but in a more understandable format and with greater depth. It goes beyond this in that it covers so much more that is unique in a variety of areas such as the theory of terrorism and technology, the group psychology of terrorism, aerosol science, sensors (one of the most complete works on chem., bio and nuclear sensors that I have seen), medical preparedness, training and homeland security infrastructure. It is concise and timely and is written by a distinguished group of scholars with a broad range of expertise to thoroughly cover all of these complex topics.

The Search for Aladdin's Lamp (Choose Your Own Adventure, No 117)
Published in Library Binding by Gareth Stevens (January, 1995)
Authors: Jay Leibold and Judith Mitchell
Average review score:

Great book that will make you want to read them all.
Another beautiful and exciting Choose Your Own Adventure. These books should be campaigned and advertised, they are so wonderful and turned me to a love of reading 10 years ago. After you read this book you feel as if you traveled to these places. Don't miss out!

Seeing Stars: The McDonald Observatory Its Science & Astronomers
Published in Hardcover by Eakin Publications (September, 1997)
Author: Mark G. Mitchell
Average review score:

excellent introduction to serious astronomy for young folk
As a former President of the Houston Astronomical Society, I found the illustrations and clear presentation to be especially useful for young students - I'd say 6th - 8th grade. David Levy--the co-discoverer of the comet that smacked into Jupiter--wrote the introduction.

Shang Han Lun: On Cold Damage, Translation & Commentaries
Published in Hardcover by Paradigm Pubns (August, 1999)
Authors: Craig Mitchell, Feng Ye, Nigel Wiseman, Zhongjing Zhang, and Chung-Ching Chang
Average review score:

On Cold Damage True to Tradition
There have been other translations of Shang Han Lun (the Treatise on Cold Damage) into English, but this is the first to preserve the original's clinical detail and precise terminology. It is also the first to include the most commonly encountered edition of the original Chinese text, both in characters and in Pinyin tone marks. Since the number of characters used in the original text is few, this book is a good text for those wishing to learn ancient medical Chinese as well as a useful clinical reference.

The text commentaries, while useful and appropriate, are limited to the original applications of the herbal formulas described in the Shang Han Lun. It is disappointing that the authors chose not to cover later applications of these formulas, as the inclusion of such material would have made the text authoritative. However, what the work lacks in breadth, it makes up for in depth by being the most comprehensive and unadulterated look at the original Shang Han Lun system of herbal medicine available in English.

Unfortunate is the adoption of coauthor Nigel Wiseman's exotic English terms for traditional Chinese medical phrases, which are uniformly neologisms or new, awkward usage of existing and often unrelated English words. This choice makes for difficult reading, but Mr Wiseman's terms are explained in detail both in situ and in the excellent glossary section of this book. Liberal use of the glossary will make clear to the reader words and turns of phrase which otherwise seem designed to obfuscate.

Despite a few faults, this book is a landmark translation for the English-speaking practitioner of Chinese medicine wishing to study the theory and practice of the Shang Han Lun, or to begin learning ancient medical Chinese. What it may lack in the details of execution, it more than makes up for with an overall solid translation, including the original Chinese text, and a useful glossary. The coauthors manage to convey a clear sense of this way of looking at infectious diseases and epidemiology, a way very different from the modern Western view, but also eerily similar on closer examination. This book will be welcomed, both by the clinician and the advanced student.

Shapes to Cut: Animals
Published in Paperback by Teaching & Learning Company (April, 1998)
Authors: Judy Mitchell and Gary Mohrman
Average review score:

Awesome patterns
There are 32 patterns of animals in this book for multiple uses. My preschoolers love to color them. You could use the patterns to make flannelboard stories. I've made mobiles from them, and they are so easy for even young preschooler to cut out themselves. Highly recommend all 5 of the books.

Shrinking the State: Globalization and Public
Published in Paperback by Fernwood Books Ltd (January, 1998)
Authors: John Shields and B. Mitchell Evans
Average review score:

Excellent eye-opener into Canada's ideological war.
This book seems along the lines of Linda McQuaig's series on the crisis in Canadian Welfare state. However, I think it is more difficult to read and get into at first. Once into the book, I found it an excellent explanation about what is happening in Canada's federal and provincial governments: Cuts to social programs, increasing influence of business, the details of our deficit and debt and an description of the effects of globalization. I highly recommend "Shrinking the State" for anyone who wants to open his or her mind to the ideology that is currently directing the massive transformation in the way Canada is governed!

Simple Relaxation: The Mitchell Method of Physiological Relaxation for Easing Tension
Published in Paperback by John Murray Pubs Ltd (April, 1989)
Authors: Laura Mitchell and Michael Bartlett
Average review score:

excellent book!
This is an excellent book! I have read many books on relaxation over the years, but this woman really knows what she is talking about. Her method can be used unobtrusively in the stress of everyday life, which is when we need it! I really think this book should be reprinted as a public service.

Unfortunately, the first three theory chapters are a little on the dry, academic side, but you can skip right to the good stuff starting in chapter four. Another negative is that the print is unnecessarily small and tight, even in this revised edition, and not exactly easy on the eyes, but it's worth it to mine the gold! By the way, the edition with this ISBN is the *paperback* version, not hardcover as it says in the product details.

One more plus: in chapter seven Mitchell discusses Disassociation, a specific relaxation method I have never come across anywhere else, which is about learning to tense only the muscles you need for a certain activity while relaxing the rest. As an amateur cellist who has often had trouble with muscle strain (playing almost *any* instrument is surprisingly hard on the body!) this method looks very interesting (though I must admit I haven't tried it yet myself). I remember the cellist Pablo Casals in his memoirs talking about the need for exactly this kind of relaxation.

All in all, if you come across this book second-hand, snap it up!

Small Animal Dentistry
Published in Paperback by Butterworth-Heinemann Medical (15 January, 2002)
Author: Paul Q. Mitchell
Average review score:

Great book - very practical
I found this book to be very practical and easy to read. I have been looking for a book to help me understand dental problems in general practice and this book taught me so much. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone needing to get started and build a firm foundation in veterinary dentistry. I especially loved the photos of actual procedures and the chapters on intraoral radiology and oral surgery. The section on oral surgical instruments and the source list in the back helped me find the right tools for the job.
